Book Cover PS Practice

Purpose:

To get comfortable placing photos and editing a document in Photoshop, today and tomorrow we'll be creating a book cover based on an image from moma.org.  Think of your favorite book, or a book that you are familiar with.  You will be creating a new cover for that book based on a piece of art you find at moma.org.  Be sure to think of the book's themes or characters to help you decide what piece of art you feel best represents it.  You can also think of how the book made you feel when choosing imagery.  THIS is an important role of the designer.  To think about how something made you think or feel and try to design work based on those intangible (things you can't see or touch) elements.

Process:

  • Create a new folder called "moma book"
  • Create a new Photoshop document that's 8 in wide by 10 in tall, 300 ppi called "2_lastname_momabook"
  • At moma.org, find an image that you feel best fits the theme or content of your chosen book.
  • SAVE that image to your "moma book" folder
  • PLACE the image on your document.
  • Arrange the images and required text (see below)

Requirements:

  • Your book cover must include at least one image PLACED on from the moma.org website that you think fits the book you've chosen.
  • Book title must be present
  • Book author must be present

Contstraints:

  • No offensive images or text

Extra:

  • If your book is an award winner, see if you can add text or images related to that award

Elements of Art Blog Post!

Intro
Now that we have spent some time exploring the basic elements of art, it's time to create your own catalog of examples.  That way, you ALWAYS have a little reference guide on your own blog!

Process
  • Visit www.moma.org --> explore
  • Make a new blog post titled “Elements of Art”
  • Give each element its own heading. (Example: “Shapes”)
  • Under each heading, give a definition for the element of art
  • Under each definition, place at least two pieces of art that you feel represent the element of art
  • If the element has different types (shape, for example), find pieces that fit each type
  • For each piece, use the artist’s name, the piece’s name, the medium, and the year it was made
  • Give a reason for each piece WHY you think it works best for the element of art chosen

Requirements

  • Blog post must be called "Elements of Art"
  • Each element of art must be represented with two example pieces of art
  • Each piece of art must be accompanied by it's title, the artist, the medium, the year produced and a short description of why you chose it

Example post

SHAPE

A shape is some area set apart from other areas by one of the other elements of art.  A shape can be made by connecting two lines.  It could also be made by using value, texture, etc.

Artist: Gabriel Orozco
Tite: Kytes Tree
Medium: Painting
Year: 2005

"Kytes Tree" clearly uses shape as one of its main components.  It uses mostly geometric shapes that appear to be overlapping, mostly at 90-degree angles.  The piece is mostly made of circles or half circles and the negative and positve space created by them overlapping.  The shapes on the edges are bigger giving an effect that the shapes are moving toward the viewer, or like the middle is the center of a tube or vortex.
